A potted history of the Society

The Sunningdale Savoy Chorus was founded in 1990 and was formed originally to perform the works of Gilbert and Sullivan by a dedicated group of local people. Their first performance was a double bill consisting of Ballads, Songs and Snatches - An Evening with Gilbert & Sullivan and Trial by Jury.

In 1993 Geoffrey Horton became the Society Musical Director. Under his enthusiastic direction A Broadway Revue was put on in April 1993. The productions that followed were all G&S including HMS Pinafore (1994), The Mikado (1994), The Gondoliers (1995) and a double bill of Cox & Box and Trial by Jury (1996).

In 1997 Judith Flint joined us as accompanist for The Pirates of Penzance, which very successfully sold out for three nights and was followed, in 1998, by Patience, one of the lesser-known works of Gilbert & Sullivan.

The 1999 season was marked by a change in direction and a complete challenge with the production of My Fair Lady, which was a massive achievement for all, concerned. A 10th anniversary production of Iolanthe  - it had to be G&S - followed in 2000 but we then returned to the popular musical with Oklahoma! (2001) and then Fiddler on the Roof (2002). Interspersed with the above productions we perform concerts locally on a regular basis, supporting a local charity The Paul Bevan Trust, and providing Christmas concerts for our own funds and enjoyment.

We have performed at All Souls Church Centenary celebrations, joined with the BT Voices for Hospices, when other choirs joined us for The Messiah and taken part in a Millennium concert at Ascot Racecourse performing The Creation with Jonathan Wilcocks conducting. More recently we have also performed at The Marlow Theatre, Canterbury and Wellington College and also supported the Church Choir at Holy Trinity Sunningdale for special services at Christmas and during Holy Week.

We meet on Monday evenings at Cheapside Village Hall for rehearsals at 8pm, and The Cordes Hall, Sunninghill is the normal venue for our productions. The Society has about 40 members who are all friendly and sociable - an annual BBQ and a Christmas meal are part of the social calendar together with the essential visits to a local hostelry post rehearsal!

Due to the small, friendly atmosphere members are actively encouraged to take major roles in productions (we like to keep it in house as much as possible). We manage the whole production ourselves, nobody is left out and if wives, friends or partners are left at home they are soon coerced into volunteering in one of the many important backstage or front of house roles.

Help is always required and we always welcome new members. If you can sing, act or help in any way please speak to any member of the Society after the performance or alternatively contact the Secretary, Valerie Ryalls, to be added to our mailing list or to join valerie.ryalls@hotmail.co.uk.  For the very brave, just turn up at a rehearsal on a Monday night and you will be made most welcome.
